In the early 13th cent. a single hand added an inscription in the form 'liber sancte crucis de waltham' to five of the surviving volumes. A later-13th-cent. hand wrote a more elaborate ex libris with anathema in seven volumes. The common form of pressmark, written usually on the front pastedown or on a flyleaf, is 14th-cent. and consists of a number followed by al. ca., al. p., or al. supp., for almario canonicorum, almario prioris, and almario supprioris respectively. In some manuscripts there is also the mark pri. dor. or Su. dor., usually on a flyleaf and near the short-title, for prioris dormitorium and, presumably, supprioris dormitorium.
Also (several times repeated in the book) "Dominus Galfridus de Berteyng canonicus noster dedit nobis hunc librum in usum monasterii cuius anime propicietur deus Amen" (s. xiv & xv).
Also (s. xiii) "G. de Bereking' scripsit.".
For discussion of the keeping of books at St Mary's, see J. M. W. Willoughby, 'Inhabited sacristies in medieval England: the case of St Mary's, Warwick, Antiquaries' Journal 92 (2012), 331–45.
The Registrum Anglie reported 7 titles from the library (see R. H. Rouse & M. A. Rouse, CBMLC 2 (1991), 315).
See too J. P. Carley, 'John Leland at Somerset Libraries', Proceedings of the Somerset Archaeological and Natural History Society 129 (1985), 141–154.
A pressmark occurs in only five manuscripts and is followed in each case by the words 'Pe. 7 Ed. West.'
