The 15th-cent. pressmark refers to the cupboards (armariola) A, B, C, D, usually also to the number of the shelf in the cupbord and sometimes to the number of the book on the shelf. The shelf-mark is sometimes written inside the cupboard-letter. Two liturgical books are marked 'de armariolo in choro' and eleven books 'de studio abbatis'. Common forms of ex libris inscriptions are 'Hic est liber sancti Albani quem qui abstulerit aut titulum deleuerit anathema sit', often in red ink, and 'Hunc librum dedit . . . Deo et ecclesie sancti Albani', followed by an anathema.
