Notes on evidence: | The volume contains the ex dono of Richard Witton, first dean of the college, and the list of books dated 1487 'in isto librario' (SC222). 'Iste liber legatur ecclesie colleg' de derlyngton per magistrum Ric' Witton' primum decanum ibidem Et decanus habebit vsum [. .] tociens indeget reparacionem decanus reparabit sumptibus suis propriis', at end, erased, but legible under u-v light. A volume made of three booklets but annotated by the same 15th-cent. hand, to show they were together by the time the book arrived at Darlington. |

Ownership: | Richard Witton (d. by 1451), first dean of the college. Capt. T. F. Powell, Sharow, Ripon. Thomas Hopper, a former owner, was Capt. Powell's great great uncle: he 'was a Durham man and lived in the Bailey near the Cathedral'. Purchased by Mr Harold Smith of Leicester, and given by him to Durham UL in 1988. |
